CHRONIC PAIN MANAGEMENT
The treatment of chronic pain increasingly involves mental health professionals as awareness of the psychological factors which contribute to its development. Consultation may be requested to determine whether pain is functional, the extent to which psychological factors complicate an organic process, and to recommend whether pain-relieving surgery should be performed or to predict its results. Through involvement with pain units, our psychological services can seek not only reduction in pain, but also emphasize the elimination of pain behaviors, i.e., an effort is made to change the lifestyle of inactivity, narcotic usage, talking about pain, and avoiding work or other behaviors, which together comprise the "sick role." Psychological techniques can help produce profound changes.
